The Memoir Writer & The Tutor

Ellyn Hoffman

I’m both a seasoned tutor of high school students in English, ACT and SAT preparation, and college essay writing and writer of memoirs to chronicle family stories. My degrees (B.S. in English and Education, and J.D. degree), critical thinking skills, practical know-how and professional experience are the right combination for these two business hats.

The Tutor

College admission essay writing and standardized test prep, along with writing for English classes, has been my focus for over 15 years. Since Covid hit, my business has expanded to include helping students in college deal with the rigors of college level analysis in various classes.

I firmly believe that every student has an individual fingerprint for learning. My tutoring focuses on finding what works for YOUR child. Sometimes, that means introducing them to a new way of studying — skills they can take with them into their future studies. The focus is always on identifying methods that make sense for how their minds work. I’ve found it’s essential that the kids I work with feel confident that I can build upon and enhance their abilities. Make no mistake: I am squarely focused on positive, tangible outcomes. I model, I introduce new techniques, I encourage, and we get those “aha” moments. In the end, benchmarks have been reached, scores have risen, and confidence levels have been boosted.

The Memoir Writer

For the past eight years, I’ve been ghost-writing memoirs. My goal is to chronicle the family story in the voice of my client. I love having my client’s children and grandchildren tell me that they experience their parent’s voice and personality when they read the memoir.

The process of telling the stories is part of the fun for my clients. Who doesn’t love to talk to a genuinely interested audience? A number of my clients have proven to be natural storytellers. For others, sitting down to reflect on pivotal moments and meaningful relationships in their life, along with questions from me to unearth details I think their families would like to know, prompt good storytelling.

The final product is customized to how the client wants to tell their story —anecdotes organized in a compelling storyline, business and personal philosophies, thoughts on spirituality, historical context, and even aspirations for their children and grandchildren. I often include photographs to make for an even more engaging read.
